In a game that was as much about grit as it was about skill, the 17U AAA Kootenay HA squad held off a relentless HC Edmonton attack to secure a hard-earned 3-2 victory. The game was marked by a staggering shot discrepancy, with HC Edmonton firing an incredible 50 shots on net compared to Kootenay's 31. The story of the game, however, was written by Kootenay's goaltender Mateo Sinclair, who stood on his head, turning away 48 of those 50 shots to backstop his team to a crucial win. The contest was also a penalty-filled affair, setting a physical and sometimes chaotic tone from the opening period.
The scoring opened early for Kootenay, with Xavier Barrett capitalizing just four minutes into the game. The first period, however, descended into a parade to the penalty box, highlighted by a massive scrum with just over a minute remaining that resulted in a slew of roughing minors and misconducts to players from both sides, including Jonas Rousselle, Jagger Holcomb, and Charles Barner. Amidst the chaos, HC Edmonton's Hudson Deren managed to find the back of the net, assisted by Noah Horvatis and Kale Whitney, to tie the game before the first intermission. Kootenay regained the lead in the second period thanks to a goal from Holden Nelson, with helpers from Jaxon Derosier and Lane Johnson, giving them a slim 2-1 lead heading into the final frame.
The third period saw Kootenay extend their lead when Jacob Rogers scored, assisted again by the playmaking of Jaxon Derosier and Brady Dyer, making it 3-1. Despite being heavily outshot 16-9 in the final period, Kootenay's defense and the stellar play of Sinclair held firm. HC Edmonton's Tristan Flegg, facing only 31 shots, was solid in his own right but ultimately took the loss. The game ended with Kootenay successfully killing off late penalties to seal the 3-2 win, a testament to their resilience and spectacular goaltending in the face of an offensive onslaught.
