The Calgary Stallions skated to a convincing 6-2 victory over the Wolves HC in a game that was closer on the shot clock than on the scoreboard. The Wolves came out firing, outshooting the Stallions 18-17 in the first period, and even managed to tie the game at 1-1 late in the frame. Carson Shettell was the beneficiary of a nice setup from Boston Engel and Parker Labossiere to get the Wolves on the board. However, the Stallions' Kyson Trinh had opened the scoring earlier, and they never truly looked back. The game's turning point came in a chaotic final minute of the second period. Just as Grady Ford scored to put the Stallions up 2-1, a series of penalties erupted, including a major for boarding assessed to the Wolves' Jace Frencheater, putting his team in a deep hole.
From that moment on, the Stallions seized control. Kage Grenkow scored what would stand as the game-winning goal shortly after the major penalty was called, giving his team a two-goal cushion and all the momentum. The Wolves' Cohan Sims managed to bring his team back within one, but the Stallions responded with three unanswered goals. Elliott Wilson, assisted by Oliver Kendall and Lucas Derdall, restored the two-goal lead before the second intermission. In the third period, Tripp Gillespie took over, scoring two goals just over five minutes apart, with both tallies assisted by the dynamic duo of Grenkow and Derdall, who was a playmaking force all night.
Despite a valiant 47-shot effort from the Wolves, they could not solve Stallions' netminder Owen West, who was credited with the win. The Wolves' Mathias Wright faced 37 shots in the losing effort. Discipline was a major factor, as the Wolves were assessed a string of penalties, including a major and a misconduct, which the disciplined and opportunistic Stallions capitalized on to pull away. The win was a testament to the Stallions' efficient offense and ability to weather an early storm, while the Wolves will be left to rue their missed opportunities and costly penalties.
