The 17U AAA HC Edmonton squad came out firing on all cylinders, setting the tone early with a relentless offensive attack that saw them outshoot Coquitlam 16-13 in the opening period. Jagger Holcomb opened the scoring for Edmonton midway through the first, finishing off a slick passing play from Logan Rowbotham and Kale Whitney. Coquitlam responded quickly when Charlie Pena buried a feed from Seajay Loreti to tie the game, but that would be the lone bright spot for the visitors. The period was marked by physical play, with Edmonton’s Greyson Howse and Coquitlam’s Theron Lashley earning matching roughing minors late in the frame.
Edmonton took control for good in the second period, outshooting Coquitlam 12-7 and breaking the tie when Brogan Carther scored with assists from Holcomb and Nathan Ghostkeeper. The physicality continued with multiple penalties on both sides, including a penalty shot awarded against Edmonton’s Ryo Chong late in the period that was turned aside. In the third, Edmonton poured it on with 19 shots, starting with Jacob Paquet’s even-strength game-winner just 1:47 into the period. Noah Horvatis then capitalized on the power play, set up by Ryan Quintilio and Hudson Deren, before Deren returned the favor by scoring another power-play goal just over two minutes later, with Quintilio and Horvatis assisting.
The game grew increasingly chippy as it wore on, culminating in a series of misconducts handed out with just over seven minutes remaining. Edmonton’s Charles Barner, Lealand Brokop, and Coquitlam’s Dayton Holenstein and Forest Barnes were all sent off with 10-minute misconducts following a scrum. Despite the penalties, Edmonton’s defense and goaltending held firm—Linden Zaichkowsky turned aside 28 of 29 shots for the win, while Joel Paladino faced a barrage of 47 shots in the Coquitlam net. The special teams battle proved decisive, with Edmonton converting twice on the power play to seal a convincing 5-1 statement victory on home ice.
